National Zookeeper Week 2023
Last year during #nationalzookeeperweek Columbian Park Zoo highlighted a way to help zookeeper mental health when coming to visit. We would like to reshare this specific message this year because not only does it help our zookeepers out a lot, but it can also help make for a better visit.
“Tip: Respect the Barriers
Did you know zookeepers frequently suffer from something called “lock anxiety?” It’s the fear of unintentionally leaving a lock, gate, or door unsecured – which at a zoo could lead to a life-threatening situation for coworkers, animals or even the general public. Keepers carry huge public safety responsibilities on top of the animal care burden. To add to the stress, a keeper’s day also involves intercepting visitors as they reach through fences, stand on railings, step over chains, open staff-only doors and try to sneak into off-public areas (and we know y’all know better!)
Keeping everyone safe is a zookeepers #1 priority. Help them help you by staying on pathways and never, ever crossing safety barriers.” Shared originally by @ColumbianParkZoo

World Lion Day, World Giraffe Day, World Wildlife Day, and National Wildlife Day (celebrated twice a year on it’s own on both February 22nd and September 4th), as well as many more days to shine a spotlight on the amazing wildlife found around the world! There are a lot of dates to track Like Keeper Dana said, for us, National Wildlife Day is everyday!
