Meet our Parrots!
Lion Habitat Ranch is home to 12 parrots. The word parrot is an umbrella term used for the brightly colored tropical bird family that has 4-toed feet and shares similar diets, despite being found on different continents. Here at Lion Habitat, we have several species of macaws that are naturally found in Central and South America, an Amazon parrot that is naturally found in the Amazon rain forest, an African Grey parrot that is naturally found in equatorial Africa, and several Sulfur-Crested Cockatoos that are naturally found in Australia. We also have a couple of hybrid species of macaws that do not occur naturally in the wild and are bred under human care for the pet trade. All of our parrots are rescues, some parrots came from another zoo that was closed and others previously belonged to people as pets that were surrendered to us. Research is key when considering adopting any type of parrot, and most importantly, working out whether you are the right home for such a complex pet bird. Birds are the most re-homed pet in the world due to inexperienced people quickly realizing that they are not a suitable home for a pet parrot. Depending on the species, parrots can live up to 60-80 years old!
