Meet our Emus, Ostriches, and Tortoises!
Our emus and ostriches were rescues, formerly kept as pets or came from another zoo. Emus and ostriches belong to the family of Ratites, the large, flightless, long necked, and long-legged birds. The ostrich is the largest bird in the world, they can stand up to 9 feet tall and are found in Africa. Ostriches are the fastest animal that walks on 2 legs, they can reach top speeds of up to 43 mph. Emus are the second largest bird in the world, they can stand up to 6 feet tall and are found in Australia. Emus can reach top speeds of up to 35 mph. Since they are flightless birds, they have big powerful feet.
We have 2 Sulcata tortoises, also known as African spurred tortoises. They are the third largest species of tortoise in the world. Our smaller tortoise is about 100 pounds, and the larger one is about 150 pounds. Sulcata tortoises can live to be 80-100 years old, and we estimate ours to be around 25 years old.
